Elkhorn's
Huck Finn Trout Pond is for the little
fishing folks - typically the first fish that kids will catch. The
pond is stocked with Rainbow Trout after the Spring winter run-off
is over, this is normally around the first week of June. The fish
will range from 10 to 16 inches; and they make a great meal; because
of the Elkhorn's location where the river water is some 10-15 degrees
colder than the Front Range, the 10" trout may grow to 12-14"
by late Fall.
Fishing licenses are not required and the fishing equipment is provided,
including bamboo Huck Finn fishing poles. Our staff will assist with
baiting the hooks, landing the fish and then provide cleaning instruction
so that the kids learn these techniques.
Adults typically fish the Fall River,
which runs next to the Trout Pond. This river produces some of the
largest fish caught each season, including both rainbows and browns.
It is also an excellent river for fly fishing later in the summer,
where our 'fishing' guests fly fish each morning and afternoon with
considerable success; they generally practice a catch-and-release
policy, although it is not required.
Elkhorn guests frequently have the kids catch the fish and use the
Elkhorn's grills adjacent to the Huck Finn Trout Pond Pavilion to
have family picnics, when it is not reserved for specific functions.
